In 2005, Government Office for London commissioned the Twinning and Mentoring project to research the potential for London's local authorities to advise and mentor each other to improve recycling performance. The latest phase in 2007/08, funded by Defra and London Councils, resulted in a series of meetings between local authority officers who shared their experiences and discussed barriers to effective waste management.
The following areas of recycling were identified as particularly challenging: organics, estates and flats above shops, trade waste and enforcement on waste and recycling. Our 'Developing a better recycling service' network meeting will address these areas, providing a forum for waste professionals to share information and good practice.
Speakers include:
Recycling organics in an inner London borough - Ann Baker, recycling manager, London Borough of Camden
Recycling organics in an outer London borough - Andrew Baker, waste strategy officer, London Borough of Harrow
Recycling facilities in new developments - Crest Nicholson (to be confirmed)
Estates recycling in Tower Hamlets - Kevin Crook, waste policy and development manager, London Borough of Tower Hamlets
Trade waste recycling - Scott Wilson, commercial waste division group leader, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
Collecting trade waste - Waste Recycling Group
Enforcing recycling - John Woodruff, head of waste management, London Borough of Bromley and Michael Lai, group manager for waste and sustainability, London Borough of Barnet
