RECYCLING ADVICE FOR SMEs IN LONDON

Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in London now have the benefit of their own dedicated team of recycling advisers, thanks to WRAP’s (Waste & Resources Action programme) Recycle At Work Advisory Programme in partnership with London Remade.

Based in the heart of the city, recycling advisers Hara Xirou, Peter Crome and Elena Rivilla make up the new London Remade Recycle at Work team. The team will provide free of charge one-to-one support to SMEs to help them recycle more materials by finding appropriate local recycling services, assessing what can be recycled, developing in-house recycling schemes and providing training to encourage staff to use them.

Covering all 33 London boroughs, the London Remade Recycle at Work team will also liaise with local recycling service providers to help get additional services into new areas and materials, making it easier and more convenient for SMEs in London to recycle their waste.

Since 2001, London Remade has successfully helped to divert 1.23 million tonnes of waste from landfill and advised over 400 businesses on how to recycle more and reduce their impact on the environment. Between them, the London Remade Recycle at Work team also has a wealth of recycling experience and expertise to draw upon. Team leader, Hara Xirou, spent four years studying biology, environment and sustainability and has three years experience in the waste and recycling industry. Her experience includes researching, developing and delivering recycling projects and creating and managing office waste minimisation and recycling schemes.

Hara will be supported by Peter Crome, who studied environmental management and sustainable development in his native Australia, and Elena Rivilla, an environmental sciences graduate.

Hara Xirou, Team Leader, London Remade Recycle at Work Team, says: “Our aim is to be a one-stop shop for SMEs who want to start recycling at work or recycle more things.  We will be providing support to SMEs free of charge to help them through the process, advising what can be recycled and how best to store and segregate materials for recycling. WRAP is also in the process of developing an on-line searchable database of recycling service providers.

“In addition we can provide on-site training tailored to the individual business. We are particularly keen to hear from SMEs who want to recycle their office and packaging waste, and from pubs, clubs and hotels.”

The London Remade Recycle at Work Team is funded by WRAP’s English Regions Programme as part of a programme of activity funded by the BREW (Business Resource Efficiency and Waste) programme to increase SME recycling.

Sarah Downes, WRAP’s Manager English Regions, says: “Many SMEs want to recycle their waste but find it difficult to access appropriate recycling services, because they think it is more costly and time consuming and they lack information and internal human resource to get started, this means good recyclable materials are going to landfill.

“The London Remade Recycle at Work Team can offer practical support to SMEs to increase and improve recycling in their business as well as raising awareness of the environmental and cost benefits.”
