Residential home saves £1,200 p.a. by improving energy efficiency

High Broom, a residential home, have undertaken a number of resource saving actions and will cut running costs by £1,200 p.a. and significantly improve its environmental performance and public image.

Energy Efficiency

  • Identified lighting as a significant energy cost, and replaced tungsten bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent lamps. As quality of light is an important consideration in a residential home, the management at High Broom consulted the staff and residents prior to changing the bulbs. Fifteen different types of bulb were trialled before settling on the decorative micro-spiral type. This met the aesthetic requirements of chandeliers and decorative lighting, but with a considerable energy saving (approximately 75% reduction in lighting (energy costs).
  • Hot water and heating system pipes have been insulated and thermostatic radiator valves are used on all radiators.
