The 5 star Grand Hotel saves over £6,300 a year by good energy, water and waste management
The 5 star Grand Hotel is a large luxury hotel with 152 rooms and has been sympathetically restored to meet 21st century standards. Management have taken a number of actions to reduce utility use, help the environment and achieve cost savings.
Energy Efficiency
-
Over 150 energy saver compact fluorescent light bulbs have been installed throughout the hotel. These bulbs are on 24 hours a day, so savings are very high.
-
Using energy saving light bulbs throughout the hotel is saving over 61,000 kWh, or £4,157 per year. As a result, carbon dioxide emissions will fall by 28 tonnes a year. Energy saver light bulbs use approximately 75% less energy than a normal tungsten bulb for the same level of illumination. They also last approximately 8 times longer, thereby saving on the purchase cost, as well as staff time to replace blown bulbs.
Waste Management
-
The hotel recycles all glass bottles, paper and cardboard. Chambermaids have been instructed to collect glass bottles and newspapers from guests’ rooms for recycling.
-
Recycling glass, paper and cardboard saves around £2,000 a year on waste removal charges. Recycling is cheaper than throwing away, and is better for the environment.
Water Efficiency
-
The Grand Hotel is planning to replace all toilets with low-flush models throughout the hotel. So far it has installed low flush toilets in 26 ensuite bathrooms.
-
By installing low flush toilets with smaller toilet cisterns, the hotel is saving 113,000 litres of water a year, equating to a financial saving of £231 off the annual water bill.
