Tile manufacturer makes over £18,300 p.a. from energy and water efficiency actions
Following advice from attending SUMS (Simple Utility Management Seminars) Aldershaw Handmade Tiles Ltd. have undertaken a number of resource saving actions. These will cut running costs/increase profits by £18,300 p.a. and significantly improve environmental performance and public image.
Energy Efficiency
- Insulation costing £3,000 has been installed, reducing the drying time for the tiles. This enables two kilns worth of tiles per week to be dried instead of 1¾, increasing potential turnover by 14%. Waste is reduced by approximately 1%, working conditions are improved and condensation is reduced. This has resulted in increased turnover of £16,854 p.a. In addition to this a larger number of tiles can be dried for no increase in fuel consumption - this saving has yet to be quantified.
- By switching off the generation plant during lunchtime one hour of energy generation is saved each day. This equates to £1,296 and 13.4 tonnes of C02 emissions saved p.a.
Water Efficiency
-
Rainwater is collected from the roof area and is used to supply the process-mixing pump. This supplies approximately 70% of the water required and saves £150 p.a. This cost £65 to install so will pay for itself in 5 months.
Environmental learning
Aldershaw Handmade Tiles Ltd. attended Simple Utility Management Seminars (SUMS) and a Renewable Energy seminar both ran as part of the
betre programme. Newsletters from the betre programme were received throughout the course of the programme.Summary of Cost Savings
