Office awareness at Rio Tinto achieves ISO 14001
The Problem
In a limited of time how do you give 250 very busy staff awareness training in both ISO14001:2004 and OHSAS18001? This was the conundrum faced by the Statius Consultants responsible for implementation of the integrated Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental systems.
The Solution
In conjunction with members of the Rio Tinto London Health & Safety committee it was decided to run a series of six one hour long road-shows in a ‘Trade Fair’ format. Eight stations were set up in an auditorium covering the following topics:
-
The Environment
-
Integrated Management Systems
-
Ergonomics
-
Working at Height
-
Driving Vehicles
-
Isolation/Electrical Safety
-
Contractor Management
-
The Alexander Technique
Staff were split up into small groups of 4-6 who visited each station in rotation. The Statius consultants designed and manned the Environmental and Integrated Management Systems stations. The remaining stations being hosted by members of the HSE committee. The hosts then provided a short talk on the given subject using visuals and props and then answered any questions arising.
The sessions were exceptionally well received with one very senior Rio Tinto director commenting
“This is the most professional, animated and energetic presentation I’ve ever seen on these subjects”.
Other comments included:
“For me, the interactive nature and the focus on keeping it relevant to people’s lives at work and at home were key factors in the impact of the sessions”.
“The sessions have reinvigorated HSE engagement in the London office”.
When externally assessed the auditor was shown a video of the awareness sessions and commented how impressed he was at the approach to awareness training and the knowledge and enthusiasm of the staff whom he interviewed.
