Savoy Court Hotel saves over £1,860 a year by recycling and using low energy light bulbs

The Savoy Court Hotel is a medium sized family run hotel with 29 bedrooms and have taken a number of actions to reduce electricity, gas and water use, help the environment and achieve cost savings.

Waste Minimisation & Recycling

  • The Savoy Court Hotel recycles all bottles, paper and cardboard, tins, cans and other metals and textiles.
  • They choose to recycle rather than pay for waste disposal, and recycles around 75% of the total waste produced.
  • Even taking into account paying for recycling services, the hotel saves over £1,400 a year, which they otherwise would have to pay in waste disposal costs.
  • Recycling is also much better for the environment.

Energy Efficiency

  • The Savoy Court Hotel has replaced over 90% of their light bulbs with energy saver light bulbs. Altogether, 90 energy saver bulbs have been fitted, of which 30 are on 24 hours a day.
  • The hot water tanks have been lagged, and 12" thick insulation has been fitted in the loft.
  • Thermostatic radiator control valves are being fitted in the bedrooms.
  • The sash windows at the front of the building have been renovated and draught reduction strips fitted.
  • The washing machine is now used on economy setting.
  • Using energy saver light bulbs the Savoy Court Hotel are saving £460 a year on their lighting bills. Carbon dioxide emissions have also dropped by 4.6 tonnes as a result.
  • Energy saver light bulbs use approximately 75% less energy than a normal tungsten bulb for the same level of illumination. They also last up to 8 times longer, thereby saving on the purchase cost, as well as staff time to replace blown bulbs.
  • Improved insulation, draught proofing and thermostatic radiator controls will produce considerable yearly savings on their gas bills.

Water Efficiency

  • The hotel has instigated a towel policy. Guests are informed that only towels placed on the bathroom floor are laundered.
  • All bed linen is washed in an external laundry.
  • As a result of the environmental towel policy, towels are only washed when it is requested, and are not routinely washed every day, whether it is needed or not. This prevents the unnecessary waste of time, energy, detergents and water.
  • Washing bed linen in an external laundry costs more, but saves considerable staff time which would be spent washing the linen, etc. It is also better for the environment, as efficient laundries working on a large scale, use water, energy and detergents more sparingly.
  •

Supply Chain Management

  • The Savoy Court Hotel has made a conscious decision to source local produce wherever possible. Organic meat is available in the restaurant on special occasions.
  • Fair trade organic tea and coffee are served in the dining room, and fair trade tea, coffee, sugar and chocolate are also available in the guest bedrooms.
  • The Savoy Court Hotel is supporting local organic farmers and producers by buying local produce. This reduces "food miles" – the distance food has to travel before it is eaten, and ensures that the produce is fresh.
  • Buying fair trade ensures that a genuine price has been paid for the growers and producers of the tea and coffee.
