Arden Hotel saves over £1,000 a year by using low energy lighting

The Arden hotel is a small family run hotel with 11 rooms, 10 of which are ensuite, located only 60 yards from Eastbourne’s seafront. Management have taken a number of actions to reduce utility use, help the environment and achieve cost savings.

Energy Management

Actions

Over 60 energy saver light bulbs have been installed in the hotel, of which 21 are on 24 hours a day.

Double-glazing has been fitted to reduce heating loss.

Benefits

Using energy saving light bulbs throughout the hotel is saving over £560 per year. As a result, carbon dioxide emissions have also been reduced by 3800 kg a year. Energy saver light bulbs use approximately 75% less energy than a normal tungsten bulb for the same level of illumination. They also last approximately 8 times longer, thereby saving on the purchase cost, as well as staff time to replace blown bulbs.

Fitting double-glazing helps to reduce heating loss. It also eliminates drafts, and so makes for a more pleasant environment.

Water Efficiency

Actions

During recent refurbishments, low flush toilets have been installed in five of the 11 ensuite bathrooms.

Water displacement devices are used in all other toilets in the hotel.

Showers have been installed in eight out of the 10 ensuite bathrooms, replacing the existing baths which consumed large quantities of water.

The hotel has instigated an informal towel policy. Guests are informed that only towels placed on the bathroom floor are laundered.

All bed linen is washed in an external laundry.

Benefits

By installing low flush toilets with smaller toilet cisterns, the hotel will be saving 27,000 litres of water a year.

Water saving devices save 1 litre of water per flush. Installing these devices in the remaining toilets in the hotel costs nothing (devices are available free from water suppliers) but saves approximately 11,000 litres of water a year.

Installing showers rather than baths will also significantly reduce the amount of water used. On average showers tend to consume less than half of the water that baths consume. This not only saves water, but also energy used to produce hot water

As a result of the environmental towel policy, towels are only washed when it is requested, and are not routinely washed every day, whether it is needed or not. This prevents the unnecessary waste of time, energy, detergents and water.

Washing all bed linen in an external laundry costs £30 a week, but saves considerable staff time, which would be spent washing the linen, etc. It is also better for the environment, as efficient laundries working on a large scale, use water, energy and detergents more sparingly.

Waste Management

Actions

High quality pump dispensers have been installed for hand soap in the guest bathrooms.

Arden Hotel now recycles all glass, paper, cardboard and cans.

Benefits

Installing pump dispensers for soap cuts down on hotel waste. It also saves money, time, and storage space that would otherwise be needed to continually restock individual toiletries.

In total, Arden Hotel now recycles 50% of its total waste. In doing so the hotel has halved its waste bills, and so saves £40 a month, or £480 a year.
