The Peacocks Centre saves thousands of pounds through Environmental Improvements

By developing an environmental strategy designed to reduce their waste going tolandfill, the centre management have reduced their waste stream by 182 tonnes or 19%of their total waste per year. In addition to waste reduction, the Peacocks Centre hasalso made improvements to energy efficiency. They have saved over £2,700 per yearon their electricity bills, and have introduced a range of social initiatives to helpsupport the local community.

History: The Peacocks Centre was purpose-built in 1992 to expand the centre of Woking as a retail outlet area and to provide town centre entertainment facilities with good parking. Within the centre there are 82 retail outlets, six cinemas and two theatre complexes.

Company Standards: The centre management is working towards developing an Environmental Management System using the British Standard 8555.

         

Recycling

Action: Through gaining the retailers’ support, all cardboard that is generated in the centre is now segregated from all other forms of waste and compacted ready for recycling.

Benefits: Recycling the cardboard has reduced the amount of waste going to landfill by 19% per year which equates to 182 tonnes a year. This has generated savings of over £12,000 per year.

       

Energy Efficiency

Action: An energy efficiency programme has been developed, which included changing 370 front of house lamps to energy efficient lighting.

Benefits: This initiative has generated savings of over £2,100 per year

Action: Sixteen main Atria lights are switched off during the spring and summer.

Benefits: This has generated savings of approximately £600 per year.

Action: A ‘switch off’ policy has also been established: staff and visitors are asked to switch off lights and air-conditioning when not in use.
