Urinal Controls Cut Pubs Water Bills by 30%
The Setting Sun is an environmentally friend pub serving organic, wine, beers and food. Management have undertaken a number of resource saving actions such as recycling 64% of their waste and installing of urinal controls to cut water bills by £322 p.a. Their actions have clearly demonstrated that resource efficiency makes good business sense as well as being good for the planet.
Water Efficiency
Actions
-
Installed passive infrared (PIR) controls on urinals that previously had been flushing every 20minutes 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
-
Installed "Save a flush" bags in toilet cisterns to reduce flush volume by 1 litre.
Benefits
-
The PIR controls have cut water use in urinals by more than 80% and save £322 per year. The PIR controls will pay for themselves in less than a year.
-
The "Save a flush bags" which are available free of charge from Southern Water, will save an estimated 20,000 litres of water per year. This will save £32 per year on water costs.
-
Both these actions combined have cut total pub water use by 30%.
Waste Minimisation & Recycling
Actions
-
The Setting Sun recycles 64% its waste including paper, cans, plastic, cardboard and glass. That’s over 6 tonnes of waste per year!
Benefits
-
Recycling waste makes a small saving compared with the costs of sending all the waste to landfill, as well as helping the environment. As landfill disposal costs continue to rise the savings from recycling waste will be more significant.
Energy Efficiency
Actions
-
Following an Envirowise site survey it was noted that the chiller unit in the cellar was cooling to below 50C when 120C would suffice. A thermometer was put onto the cellar wall and the chiller unit has now been adjusted so that it is no longer over cooling.
-
Staff have been reminded to switch cellar lights off when not in use. This small action alone will save around £38 per year in unnecessary lighting costs.
