2. Getting Started

No organisation deliberately sets out to incur unnecessary costs, but when it comes to water management, many fail to take a few simple steps that will ensure they do not spend more money than they need to.

Did you know - A tap that drips once every second wastes 4 litres of water a day? - That's equal to two large drink bottles.

Did you know - Old toilet cisterns can use as much as 9 litres of clean water every flush? - New cisterns use a maximum of 6 litres every flush.

Water bills could be costing your company over 1% of business turnover and many organisations are paying more in water and associated costs than they need to. The first step on the way to becoming more water efficient is by assessing your water use. In order to do this you must record your water consumption. For any activities that use high volumes of water, you could consider separate metering and management.

  • Find out about meters - why you should install one (if you haven't already) and about metered bills.
  • Find out how much your water costs. What are your water costs per employee?
  • Crucial to reducing water consumption is to find out how, where and why water is being used at any particular time. Detecting and repairing leaks can be a quick way to saving money and water.
  • Benchmarking can be a useful way to help your organisation make better-informed decisions. It will aid you in identifying your current performance in terms of water consumption, and help your organisation determine priorities.
