2. How much is the Climate Change Levy costing you?

The Climate Change Levy (CCL) is a tax on energy, designed to encourage improved energy efficiency in the public and private sectors and to raise money to provide technical and grant aid to support businesses wishing to improve their energy efficiency.

How much the Climate Change Levy is costing you

  • The CCL is charged at a rate of 0.15 p per kilowatt-hour for gas and coal and 0.43 p per kilowatt-hour for electricity.
  • It is expected to increase electricity bills by between 8% and 15%.

Exemptions and rate reductions for the Climate Change Levy

There are a number of exceptions and negotiated rate reductions to the CCL. Many trade associations have negotiated reduced rates for their members. Categories exempt from the CCL include:

  • Businesses using renewable energy
  • Businesses not exceeding the domestic consumption threshold
  • Selected transport sectors

A range of sectors are eligible for negotiated rate reductions in the CCL. Click here for comprehensive Government information related to CCL exemptions and reductions.
