3. Walking to work

Walking as a form of transport is available to many staff but is particularly relevant to those living within three kilometres of the workplace. Walking on a regular basis can improve fitness levels and this is likely to reduce absenteeism and increase productivity.
Walking is probably one of the most reliable forms of transport in terms of the journey time - once you've walked the distance once, you know with some confidence that this is the time it will always take. It's also completely free and there is no requirement for any kind of equipment. Walking promotes a good company image of civic responsibility, can be a very social activity and, of course, reduces car-parking pressure.
You can encourage employees that live within three kilometres to walk to work by publicising well-trodden routes on notice boards, working with the local authority to ensure adequate sign posting for the routes (this will help visitors too), and by making sure that footpaths in the immediate vicinity are kept clear and well lit. You might like to consider setting-up or actively supporting an action group for walkers that can tackle these issues in a considered way and could push the local authority for improved maintenance of pedestrian routes. Consider allowing comfortable clothes in the office that are suitable for walking, or provide lockers for clothes and shoes.
