5. Stakeholder Pressure
An effective resource management programme demonstrates a commitment to environmental improvement. It projects an image of an efficient and well-run business with securely controlled operations. The advent of accredited Environmental Management System's (EMS's) also provides a means of officially recognising a particular standard of management and the commitment to continuous improvement.
Scrutiny of a business' environmental performance by its stakeholders has the potential to damage those businesses that are not seen to actively protect the environment. This damage can be via lower share prices, poor customer/supplier relationships and a reduced ability to get finance.
The main stakeholder pressures on companies for improved environmental performance include:
Supply chain pressure.
Companies, especially large companies with Environmental Management Systems in place, are increasingly exerting pressure on their suppliers to meet the requirements of their environmental policies.
Customers.
Customers expect companies to keep prices and costs down. Running efficient processes as demonstrated as part of a resource efficiency plan, will reassure customers that are not paying for wasteful practices.
Financial.
It is becoming increasingly common amongst shareholders, financiers and insurers to use environmental performance and to assess the potential environmental liabilities of companies in investment decisions.
Community.
Environmental issues have a high profile with the public, particularly where issues of health are of concern. Being able to demonstrate sound environmental practice will demonstrate accountability to your local community and help maintain good public relations.
Staff.
The growing public awareness of environmental issues means a company's approach to the environment can affect employee morale. Employees know first hand where materials and resources are being wasted, and what materials are being used.
